Every week, we shine a spotlight on one Lincoln Public Schools staff member! This week, meet Isabelle Short Gomez, fifth grade teacher at Randolph Elementary School.

“Isabelle truly exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond for students. She builds strong, meaningful relationships with every student who walks into her classroom, creating an environment where students feel supported, respected and motivated to learn. Isabelle holds all students to high expectations while consistently showing grace and understanding, ensuring every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

She is an exceptional teacher to observe in action. Her classroom expectations and routines are clear, consistent, and thoughtfully implemented, which allows students to fully engage in learning. She actively helps colleagues grow as educators by offering guidance, sharing best practices and leading meaningful instructional conversations. Her professionalism, dedication and collaborative spirit make her an invaluable asset to both students and staff, and she is truly deserving of a staff spotlight.” - Jacob Sprague, fourth grade teacher at Randolph Elementary School

How long have you worked for LPS?
This is my second year in LPS.

What inspired you to become part of the education field at LPS?
I started out my first year of teaching in a small town, but commuting from Lincoln. With this, I felt it was so hard to be an intentional part of the community while not living there. After that year, I made the change to working in LPS. Being a part of the community you teach in is so important and has made all the difference. I love being able to show up for my students' sporting events, art shows and band concerts.

What has been your favorite part of working here? What aspect of your job do you find most rewarding?
My favorite part of working in LPS is the Randolph community. The staff at Randolph are truly incredible. I get to grow as a teacher every day, collaborating with not only teachers on my team but throughout the school. The students and families at Randolph are so welcoming and supportive. It is so rewarding to build connections with the families here and work together to support the students. I love being able to build culture and community among the students in my classroom and helping them be the best version of themselves.

Did you attend LPS as a student? If so, which school(s)? If not, where are you from?
I grew up in Omaha and attended Millard Public Schools.

What path did you take after completing your formal education?
After graduating in 2019 from Millard West High School, I attended University of Nebraska at Kearney as a part of the Teacher Scholars Academy.

What do you enjoy most about the Lincoln community?
I love how there is something for everyone. With so many different festivals, farmers markets, and events there is always something to do or something to connect with others about.

What is your favorite childhood book or a book that has influenced your life positively?
“The Boxcar Children” was a series my third grade teacher got me hooked on. The adventure and mystery the four siblings encountered made me love reading.

Share a shout out to a former teacher who impacted your life.
Lisa Jelden was an incredible professor I had while at UNK. I am the teacher I am today because of her energy, love and compassion.
