Jr. ROTC program named one of country's best

The Lincoln Public Schools Air Force Jr. ROTC program has been honored as one of the 50 best in the country.

The LPS program, based at Lincoln Northeast High School, recently received the 2019-20 Air Force Jr. ROTC Organization Award. The award recognizes Jr. ROTC programs that have performed above and beyond normal expectations and have distinguished themselves through outstanding service to their school and community.

There are nearly 900 Air Force Jr. ROTC programs in the country. At LPS, roughly 100 students - from all six high schools - were enrolled in the program during the 2019-20 school year. Students spend a portion of the day at their home high school. At Northeast, Jr. ROTC cadets take program-specific courses about leadership, exploration of space and the science of flight. They also are heavily involved in the community through “cadet community service projects” and take a number of field trips throughout the year.
