Summer school students work to 'putt' an end to Alzheimer's

Students in Jen Deet's summer school art classes are pitching in to help with a special Alzheimer's awareness event.

The second annual Putt to End ALZ (Alzheimer's) mini-golf experience will be held in the North Star High School gym on Thursday, June 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature specially designed golf holes. Students in the 2D Design Art Class designed and painted the art on the holes that will be unveiled at the event.

"I think it's important for other people, like our young selves, to understand that we can use art to show people that there is a disease and we can help them," said North Star freshman Emma.

As the students prepared their designs over the last two weeks, event organizer Pete Ferguson spoke with the class about the effects of Alzheimer's.

“Becoming aware of many of their connections to Alzheimer’s, we were excited to be able to expand students' involvement. Their hole designs speak to the journey and more importantly the hope we must have for a cure," said Ferguson, the Youth Development Team coordinator for Lincoln Public Schools.
